1.1 What Are the CLP and CDL?
A Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) lets you practice driving a commercial vehicle on public roads while accompanied by a qualified CDL holder. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is the full license you earn after passing the skills test.
The typical path: pass the knowledge test(s) to get your CLP, hold the CLP for the federally required minimum period (at least 14 days), complete any required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), then pass the three-part skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control, and road driving.
Always confirm the exact steps with your state licensing agency — documents, fees and scheduling differ by state.
