Common Questions
Quick answers to help you get started.
How long does it take to get a CDL?
It varies. Federally you must hold your CLP at least 14 days before the skills test; training length and your state's scheduling make up most of the timeline.
Do I need ELDT?
Most first-time CDL applicants since February 7, 2022 must complete Entry-Level Driver Training with a provider listed in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.
How much does it cost?
Fees differ by state (permit, license and testing fees) and by training path. Always verify current amounts with your state's licensing agency.
Can I get a CDL for free?
Some employer-sponsored and workforce-funded programs cover training costs — read the commitment terms carefully before enrolling.
What's the minimum age?
Generally 18 for driving within your state (intrastate) and 21 for interstate driving — your state sets the specifics.
Can I drive out of state with a new CDL?
Interstate driving generally requires being at least 21. Under 21, most drivers are limited to intrastate work.
